“Freedom Fest was a unique, creative, grassroots way of having people celebrate freedom. We wanted to provide an alternative to cruising, where people could come into the park, talk about social justice issues and have fun.”
– Shameka Parrish-Wright, KYJwJ Steering Committee Member and Community Organizer.

It’s been said that Derby Day is the day when the city of Louisville comes alive. Thousands of people flock to the city to participate in numerous Derby festivities, including what’s known as derby cruising. However, for the predominately-Black area of Louisville known as the West End, their freedom to enjoy this day was squashed when the Louisville Metro Police Department shut down 35 blocks in an attempt to keep young Blacks from cruising.

To inspire, educate and empower those underrepresented communities in Louisville that were ostracized from the Kentucky Derby, PBN anchor organization Kentucky Jobs With Justice, in partnership with Building Communities and Families and many other community organizations, hosted a Freedom Fest on Saturday, May 3rd. The event took place in Elliot Park in western Louisville, where an estimated 150 people attended.

“The Freedom Fest took place where the cruising would’ve happened and this was our way to let the community know that we’re here,” said Shameka Parrish-Wright, steering committee member for Kentucky Jobs with Justice. “The coming together of the community showed that our work is genuine and that we have a consistent presence in the community.”

Throughout the day, community members witnessed a powerful collaboration of student leaders, community activists, scholars, educators, and socially aware performing artists, who combined their talents and resources in art, activism, and education to serve the needs of families under the theme of Self Determination Through Unity.

Jardana Peacock, from the University of Louisville, testified to the power and spirit of Freedom Fest by saying, “Thank you for creating beautiful community spaces where cool people get together and celebrate living!”

With presentations on voter empowerment, economic empowerment, youth empowerment, and racial profiling, Freedom Fest did more than just provide an alternative to cruising. It banded the community together and encouraged participation in the political process.

“I really appreciate those intergenerational events–building community.
So powerful.” – Tiffany Gonzales (University of Houston)

N2N-MA’s leadership as Massachusetts anchor organization makes the Bay State the eighth state in PBN’s growing coast-to-coast network. NWN-MA grew out of Neighbor to Neighbor, a national organization which focused on organizing in Central America in the 1980s, and on health care reform in the U.S. in the early 1990s. In the mid-1990s, N2N-MA re-evaluated our mission to focus on building power in low-income communities around an economic justice agenda. N2N-MA formed the Working Family Agenda Coalition and works to build a progressive majority in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Download the Full Announcement here.

“Organizers in state after state are seeing the Pushback model of building progressive power from the bottom up,” said PBN Coordinating Director Rodney McKenzie, Jr., “and they want to be a part of it. As a young national organization, PBN is seeking to manage its growth strategically by adding state partners with a proven track record of success on the ground, and as much to offer our state alliance partners as they have to gain. Neighbor to Neighbor Massachusetts is a perfect fit. PBN provides organizations like N2N-MA, that are anchoring state alliances, with critically needed financial resources, training, and technical support. We also bring together experienced and talented staff and leaders from all of our states (in Alabama, California, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, and New York) to learn from each other, determine and shape our overall strategies, and contribute to national goals. We are pleased and proud to have N2N-MA join with us to achieve our common vision.”

“Pushback Network represents a wonderful opportunity for disenfranchised communities to come together and build powerful bottom up coalitions and alliances nationwide,” said N2N-MA Executive Director Juan Leyton. N2N-MA Campaign Director, Carl Nilsson, agrees: “The Pushback Network is a movement to build grassroots political power in low-income communities of color across the country,” he said. “Our partnership with Pushback will help win victories for economic justice at the ballot box and at the State House in Massachusetts.”

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is a New England State that is considered by many to be the country’s most liberal. Its current state policies – including legislating marriage equality for same-sex couples (and withstanding attempts to repeal the law), passing the country’s highest minimum wage of $8.00 an hour, and the creation of a new universal health-care program – are heralded as some of the country’s most progressive public policies.

These victories did not come easily and required hard work, tactical negotiation and strong organizing work. “The addition of new states to the Pushback Network is really exciting for those of us that built the original foundation,” said New York-based PBN Vice-Chair Sondra Youdelman. “Neighbor to Neighbor is a strong organization with a wealth of experience building power with low-income and working class communities. They have a good, established model of electoral work that the rest of the Pushback partners will benefit from learning more about and they’re bound to benefit from getting to know the other models and approaches in our mix as well. New York is excited to welcome our northeast partners from Massachusetts.”

Record breaking voter turn-out and non-stop, multi-media presidential campaign coverage have engaged countless new voters and made this election season a can’t-miss. But when the dust finally settles next February, will most Americans be better or worse off then they are today? Pushback Network is supporting the local and regional work being done to help everyday people make their lives better.

“Across the country, from Harlem to Albuquerque to Eastern Kentucky, residents of historically disenfranchised communities are testifying about their lives in Precinct Leader Meetings, City Halls, Neighborhood Meetings, Door-to-Door Canvasses and State and National Pushback Network Convenings,” said Pushback Network Director Rodney McKenzie. “These everyday people are testifying with clear purpose and greater hope, with support from the Pushback Network, because they are taking the steps to build the power it takes to move hope into victory.”

PBN began in 2005 as a dialogue among experienced, non-partisan, independent community-based groups. Rather than forming a newly assembled national organization, PBN connects the infrastructures of well-established, high-performance community organizing groups from across the country to achieve a breakthrough in civic participation. PBN’s founders were leaders of organizations that had built long-term, on-the-ground operations within the most challenging social environments in the country. They formed PBN to “push back” against what they considered to be shortsighted, tactical approaches to community organizing and electoral work.

“Democracy doesn’t end on Election Day,” said PBN co-chair Robby Rodriguez. “It’s best to invest resources into local groups that are doing the work before, during, and after the election season.”

Through their LA Apollo City Retrofit Program, they are working hard to provide construction, operations, maintenance, and manufacturing jobs for the residents of South Los Angeles and other Los Angeles inner-city communities.

For SCOPE, the access to green jobs serves multiple purposes. Not only will these jobs provide South LA residents with comprehensive training and employment services which will offer concrete pathways out of poverty and into good paying green careers. It will also improve the quality of life for the communities, since the LA Apollo City Retrofit Program addresses the impact of environmental degradation on communities of color and seeks to redress the deteriorating public infrastructure in South LA.

To successfully draw attention to the need for green jobs in these communities, SCOPE held a Green Economy Forum on Saturday, March 12th at Dorsey High School. Over 150 community members attended the Forum as well as legislators, activists, policy makers, and staff from various environmental organizations. Notably, Assembly Speaker-Elect Karen Bass and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa were on hand to speak to the importance of creating viable job opportunities for the unemployed job seekers and the underemployed workers in South LA.

The crux of the Forum centered around three areas: educating people on the health, economic, and environmental impacts currently facing our communities; defining green jobs as quality jobs due to the possibilities of large scale growth and impact in this sector; and investing financial resources into programs such as Apollo in order to create a healthy and vibrant regional economy.

To close out the Forum, SCOPE put out a call to action for all those in attendance. They asked everyone to take action in support of green jobs by donating money, writing letters in support of state legislation, and mobilizing support of the LA Apollo City Retrofit Program. The goal for SCOPE over the next fiscal 2008-2009 year is to obtain $20 million dollars to implement Phase 1 of the LA Apollo Program.

PBN is proud to announce a new State Alliance Partnership with the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada (PLAN), making Nevada the seventh state in its growing coast-to-coast network. PLAN was formed in 1994 to bring people and organizations together to build a better Nevada and includes more than two-dozen member groups dedicated to working for social, economic, and environmental justice.

“Pushback Network’s model is centered on building progressive power from the bottom up,” said PBN Coordinating Director Rodney McKenzie, Jr., “and PLAN will contribute a great deal to our learning and strategies. PBN focuses on developing and strengthening broad-based state alliances and supporting their community organizing and voter engagement strategies to greatly increase the knowledge base, level of participation and influence of those most underrepresented in the electorate – people of color, poor and working class communities, and young people. PBN provides organizations like PLAN, that are anchoring state alliances, with critically needed financial resources, training, and technical support. We also bring together experienced and talented staff and leaders from all of our states to learn from each other, determine and shape our overall strategies, and contribute to national goals. As our other partners, PLAN is grounded in a long history of progressive achievement. We are extremely pleased and proud to now have them join with us to achieve our common vision.”

“We at PLAN are excited and honored to affiliate with the Pushback Network,” said PLAN Board Chair Kenya Pierce. “Developing deeper relationships with some of the most innovative and powerful movement building organizations in the country will be a huge boost to our efforts here in Nevada. PLAN seeks to achieve social justice, deepen democracy and transform power–we now have a model, tool and powerful ally in the Pushback Network.”

Nevada is a Western state with a changing demographic. Alongside its powerful union allies, PLAN is the most influential progressive social and economic justice organization. “PBN is focused primarily on deepening our work at the state and local levels while strategically expanding onto new states. Nevada, with work anchored by PLAN, is a crucial and very welcome addition to our mix,” said New Mexico-based PBN Chair Robby Rodriguez. “Each partner in our Network brings a tremendous amount of value to each other and to the larger progressive movement.
That’s exactly what took place the weekend of April 5-6, 2008, when over 25 community and labor activists, including PBN reps, gained the skills needed to run an efficient electoral field program at this year’s Campaign School.

The Campaign School successfully engaged and activated everyone who attended through helpful skills-building trainings facilitated by staff and leadership from the LA County Federation of Labor, UCLA Labor Center, LA Trade Tech Labor Studies Center, and PBN California partner, SCOPE.

The School then developed the skills of participants by providing trainings in the following key areas:

The Big Picture: Understanding the political landscape surrounding our work: What is the issue? Why do we do what we do? Why is it important? What will it take to win?

Developing Campaign Strategies and Plans: Understanding the basics components of effective electoral field programs including strategy development, key staff roles, recruiting allies and volunteers, overall timelines, and action planning.

Audience Targeting: Who will receive our message?

Message Development: How do we move our target audience?

Message Delivery: Overview of the most effective methods such as one-on-one trainings, door-to-door outreach, phoning, and worksite visits.

Volunteer Recruitment and Management: How to recruit volunteers and keep them engaged and active.

Logistics: What are the mechanics of a campaign? What are the technical components?

Training Volunteers: How to train for precinct walks, phone banks, presentations, worksite activities, etc.

Results Tracking: Why is it so important? What are the important pieces for tracking? What tools & techniques are needed for effective tracking and evaluation of results?

The 2008 Campaign School proved to be an invaluable experience, not just for myself, but for everyone involved. Campaign School fulfilled its goal of increasing the internal political capacity of statewide alliance-affiliated labor unions, community organizations, and other partners left feeling confident that they could successfully train and deploy teams of field organizers, telephone campaigners and canvassers, and more, during volunteer mobilizations.

Alabama took a step toward lower grocery taxes and a higher threshold for income tax Wednesday when legislative committees approved HB 274 and SB 431, the Tax Fairness Amendment of 2008. The House Education Appropriations Committee gave the plan a favorable report by voice vote.

Meanwhile, the vote in the Senate Finance and Taxation – Education Committee was 15-1. The bills, sponsored by Rep. John Knight, D-Montgomery, and Sen. Hank Sanders, D-Selma, respectively, now move to the full chambers for consideration. If both the House and Senate approve the amendment by a three-fifths vote, Alabamians will vote on the measure in November.

At the heart of the Tax Fairness Amendment is the repeal of the 4 percent state sales tax on groceries. Alabama is one of only two states – the other is Mississippi – to tax groceries fully with no discount or rebate. For a family of four with a $200 weekly food bill, the tax cut would represent a savings of more than $400 a year at the grocery store.

The Alabama Grocers Association has endorsed the proposal. “As grocers, we see day to day the struggles families have paying for necessities such as groceries and want to do something to help our customers,” said Greg Gregerson, chairman of the association’s legislative committee. Grocery stores across the state will post signs in the coming weeks to educate shoppers about the plan and urge them to ask their legislators to support it.

The amendment also would raise the state’s income tax threshold for a family of four from $12,600 to $20,000 a year by increasing standard deductions and personal exemptions. And it would end the state’s full deduction for federal income taxes, which is worth thousands of dollars for the highest earners but less than $100 for most people who make under $100,000. Ending this deduction would allow the measure to be revenue-neutral, meaning the bill would neither increase nor decrease revenues for the state’s education budget.

The committees’ actions are promising, Alabama Arise state coordinator Kimble Forrister said, and a strong core of support for the measure exists in both chambers. But he cautioned that the next step will be a challenge.

“In lining up commitments for a floor vote, the closer you get to a majority, the harder you have to work,” Forrister said. “We’re excited to get the committees’ endorsements. The committee debate highlighted both the growing support for modernizing the tax structure and a lingering reluctance to correct the imbalance. We hope this will be the year the people of Alabama get a chance to vote for tax fairness.”

ACTION ITEM:
Get your legislator on board!

Call or write your House and Senate members and urge them to support HB 274 and SB 431. Then let us know what they say!
